PORCH LIFE

I’m so excited about the quick and easy updates to our deck. I’m paint obsessed, and yet I’m always amazed at the transformation from a can of paint. Our deck was probably the original paint and stain from about twenty years ago. It really needed a refresh.

We did not DIY this one, as I’ve heard of some pretty bad DIY deck stories regarding paint and stain. We contracted this project to a reputable painter and he did a great job. The three things we did include, pressure washing using bleach, using an exterior white paint almost everywhere (railings, spindles, doors and siding), and a gray stain on the floors and stairs.

Note: we used Sherwin Williams for the gray stain and be aware that there is not a true white stain. If you want white, not off-white, you have to go with paint. Also, stains go on about one shade lighter, so take that into consideration when picking your stain.

We are also replacing the lower screens with new pop-in screens, and will update the upper screens at some point too. To reduce costs, because screens are not cheap, try going direct to a local manufacturer – you will get them at cost. Then you can measure and install them, or pay a nominal amount to a local contractor to measure/install.
