This is a simple herb clock DIY you can put together with your kids. We’ve added chamomile, rosemary, parsley and of course thyme to our garden clock. This is an easy one day (couple hours) project once you have your supplies. You can get most, if not all, of your supplies at The Home Depot.
I think this would be a great STEM or STEAM project as well. Thyme to DIY!🌱

Here’s a quick tutorial. I hope you find this as much fun as we did. My little one planted the herbs, and I glued. The clock is from hobby lobby or Michaels, I think, but has never kept accurate time. I’ve had it for years and always thought I could do something else with it. You could easily build your own clock as another step. And the RYOBI glue gun rocks! It’s cordless and shares a batter with their other products, I have their handheld vacuum and it’s the best I’ve ever used.

1. Plant the herbs in containers. If you use plastic, just make sure it’s a hard enough plastic that the glue gun won’t burn a hole in it or melt the plastic. We used small clay pots. I just didn’t see any plastic ones that I liked at the time, but there are great plastic containers out there.
2. I suggest using the Ryobi glue gun for this project. It’s cordless, gets very hot, and cools quickly. Watch your fingers and don’t touch any glue right when it comes out of this gun – it’s very hot.

3. Glue two or three large dots on the back of the herb pots, anywhere it contacts the clock, and press firmly to the clock. I had two contact points, one at the top of my pot and one at the bottom. The middle part of the pot did not contact the clock (that’s OK). Once it’s glued on, look to see if you could fill in with any additional glue. See photo below of where I added additional glue once the pot had adhered to the wood. I think this will help for long term stability.
4. Don’t overwater. Especially if using clay pots, don’t overwater as they can get heavy and in theory fall off. These are attached very well, but be mindful of over-watering. I just place an ice cube each day and so far it’s been enough for the herbs.
5. Hang anywhere that gets sun at least half of the day, doesn’t have to be full sun.
Well, that’s it! Enjoy your garden herb clock!
